Where Family Law and Psychology Intersect

We experienced such a huge response to Season 8’s Episode 1 with Parental Alienation victim, Victor Dohleman, that Host Glass decided to interview another father with a similar story to that of Dohleman. Ryan Hoffer's story reads like a Hollywood script. Like Dohleman, Hoffer returned home one day to find both his sons and all the household belongings gone. Like Dohleman, Hoffer, who founded and heads Forged Fathers, a personal growth movement, has also endured a protracted ordeal for years to reunite meaningfully with his two sons, who are now 18 and 19 years old. One of them has been amenable to what has been a sluggish reunification; the other, Hoffer reports, is still estranged from him. For a time, Hoffer was awarded custody of his two sons but claims their hostility toward him prompted him to return them to their mother. In Episode 7, Ryan Hoffer talks about the collaborative relationship with the mother of his 10-year-old daughter (a relationship for which he is very grateful after their breakup) and his struggle to have his sons in his life. Hoffer starts the conversation by openly discussing his years-long addiction issue, the writing of a bad check (which landed him in jail for three years and subsequent probation) and his redemption through religion. He also discusses his off and construction-type jack-of-all-trades business, and how his new hands-on coaching enterprise helps fathers with their angst from Parental Alienation Syndrome. He stages events and tutors dads like him with his 7-Day Reset program, which helps PAS victims focus on how to regulate their emotions, reset their nervous system, and remain grounded in high-stress situations. Hoffer shares how in 2018, he turned his life around. Host Glass queries Hoffer on his program, how it works, and what struggling viewers can gain from it. A former psychologist, Glass shows genuine compassion for Hoffer’s travails and celebrates Hoffer’s victories over the past decade. Hoffer also talks about his new book and the different support groups, like 100K Fathers, which guides dads who have lost or are losing their kids, without having to revert to the court system. Hoffer also explains the purpose of Forged Fathers and what it offers. If you’ve been touched by PAS in any way, or know someone who has, this conversation is one you will want to hear. Hoffer is enthused with hope and possibility, and his hope is infectious.

The Hourglass Podcast Ryan Hoffer - Founder, Forged Fathers

This Episode's guest certainly gave Host Glass an interesting portrait of the "Life of Ryan,"; Ryan Hoffer, that is. What sparked the message for this blog entry was the information Hoffer shared about his innovative "reset" program. It truly offers so much hope to those who have suffered from the effects of alienation from a child. Adding to Hoffer’s ideas, in this blog entry, Glass offers a solid approach for going about the reconstruction of a broken parent/child relationship. Rather than try to recapture what once was, Glass makes the reader consider a plan to start that relationship anew. He talks about trust being at the core, and building it not through mere verbalization, but through new experiences that engender a fresh bond–one that makes the child feel safe and secure. Enough said. Have a read.

Parental Alienation and Domestic Violence are the topics that have served as the centerpiece for our Season 8 series, and following CA Senator, Susan Rubio, is Ryan Hoffer, creator and founder of the Forged Fathers Movement, an organization geared to help the left-out father post breakup. Hoffer helps alienated parents get focused, regulate their moods, re-orient their nervous systems, and try to solve the difficult crisis without having to go to court. Hoffer gets frank and direct when coaching his clients, making them accountable and responsible for following his 7-day reset program—a plan that offers far more than just hope. Prior to Hoffer, Host Glass in Episode 6, chatted with California State Senator (District 22), Susan Rubio, who talked about Domestic Violence and Parental Alienation from a legislative point of view. She wrote and passed Senate Bill 331--Piqui’s Law. In her comments, she laid down the law and then some. Other Season 8 guests included abandoned father Victor Dohleman- (Episode 1), renowned psychologist, Dr. Richard Warshak (Episode 2), who broke down the psychological impact of that “syndrome,” and we also heard from “live to tell” Alesia Litteral – (Episode 3), a Domestic Violence victim whose husband shot her 7 times and stabbed her more than 33. She shares her harrowing story. In Episode 4, Host Glass had some serious banter with Matt Murphy, a former prosecutor for Orange County, CA D.A.’s office, (who has tried 20 homicide cases and won convictions for all of them). Murphy ran down the most important red flags in a toxic relationship that signals an intimate partner’s potential to subject a victim to verbal and physical Domestic Violence. Maybe even death. Host Glass pointed out the troubling “triggers” that send the angry ex over the edge. In Episode 5, featuring legendary trial attorney, Mark Geragos, was a discussion where he weighed in on the consequences for the perpetrator and laid out the high stakes for the offender who acts impulsively or methodically to harm his/her ex. Next up in Episode 8, Glass will interview renowned Michigan psychologist, Dr. Kenneth Adams, who lays out another problem with child safety and abuse: “Enmeshment.” This is a relatively new label for an age-old problem. Enmeshment is when the parent leans on the child to become the surrogate “intimate partner” by making them feel responsible for their emotional and often physical well-being. and overall, expects them to fill the void they are missing from lack of a partner. Though this issue is also referred to as “covert incest,” it is not sexual in nature, but rather mental/emotional. The child may be made to feel he/she is responsible for anything from meal prep to being a sounding board for the parent’s most personal issues. Adams explains that this type of abuse may be evident long after the child becomes an adult. Glass talks about this problem in his LookingGLASS blog post. Season 8 fall and winter Episodes will include topics like: effective co-parenting as a divorced couple; how to manage contentious issues like custody battles, and suggestions about the kids having to grow up in two households. Gray divorce, a trending norm now among older intimate partners, will be another hot topic probed by Host Glass. Tune in every second Saturday of the month for these compelling Episodes! They are thought-provoking, enlightening, and more than oh-so interesting! You will not want to miss any one of them!
