Who shot Macaulay Culkin and Vince Vaughn? Look! See!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and who better knows that than Julio Macat, the cinematographer behind the camera of such record-breaking hits as “Home Alone,” “Wedding Crashers” “Pitch Perfect” and “Daddy’s Home,” among many others. Macat has an intimate conversation with Host Glass as he shares his views on the close family dynamic and the team spirit among cast and crew while shooting a feature film. Macat, who has shot more than 40 blockbuster feature films, shares with Glass his take on how to effectively communicate with a significant other; the important message behind “Home Alone;”how he thinks that message empowers children; and how important the home is to children overall. He also talks about his favorite films—those on which he served as Director of Photography.

Macat also shares the storyline behind “Merv,” his most recent film project, starring Charlie Cox and Zooey Deschanel about the custody arrangement of the couple’s dog post-divorce. Macat also tells Glass how, while shooting that film, he carefully captured Merv’s thoughts through the camera lens, nabbing closeups of what he surmised the dog was likely thinking and feeling. Macat also tells David how he had a hard time not bursting into laughter while shooting one particular scene in “Wedding Crashers” with Will Farrell. Then there is also the story about “Only the Lonely,” directed by Chris Columbus and starring, John Candy, Ali Sheedy and Maureen O’Hara when Julio Macat shows up late on set (the only time ever) due to a flat tire. He calls it the most embarrassing moment of his career! You’ll tune in and easily tune out anything else around you as you watch this captivating HourGLASS interview! Julio Macat is as magic as the footage he produces.

Julio Macat

Julio Macat, is the Cinematographer who captures the stories of many of the films we have come to love. Though most Directors of Photography (D.P.’s) don’t get the credit they deserve for making a filmmaker’s vision of a project come to life, it is experts like Julio who know how to do just that!  How he frames the shot, how he aims the camera, how he instructs the other camera operators to collaborate with his approach, so that he winds up with the footage he and the director have agreed upon and hoped to nab. All this is critical to the impact the story will have on the audience who’s watching the final product.

Julio was at the DP helm on such movies as “Wedding Crashers,” the first three “Home Alone” classics, “Ace Ventura,” “Pitch Perfect,” and many others—40 films in all!  Macat memorializes the actors’ interpretation and the director’s intent.

Because Julio captures the mood—whether the script is a drama or a comedy—through his work on a film, he makes a strong impression on the audience and how they will react to the story.

In addition to some of the blockbuster films, Julio has also been the head guy behind the camera shooting music videos and tour events for such artists as Van Halen, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Alanis Morrisette, Melissa Etheridge and, yes, Prince!

Julio’s most recent project, MERV, is a full-length comedy feature film with Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox—about a divorced couple who have an issue over the custody of their dog.
